Founded in 1967, Dover Downs’ first harness race card didn’t take place until November 19, 1969 and it wasn’t until December 13, 1995 that Dover Downs received authorization to conduct video lottery operations as a “Licensed Agent” under the Delaware State Lottery Code, allowing Dover Downs to include casino games turning it into a racino.
The gaming room at Dover Downs spans over 91,000 square feet and opened on December 29, 1995 with 500 slot machines. By 2004, Dover Downs Hotel & Casino had expanded the number of slot machines to bring the total up to 2,500 machines.
On March 30, 2002 Dover Downs Gaming & Entertainment, Inc. becomes an independent, publicly traded company, operating under the ticker symbol DDE.
Groundbreaking began in May 2006 on a $52 million “Phase II” hotel expansion, adding 191,500 square feet of hotel space, 268 additional rooms including 44 luxury suites and 11 spa suites, and a 6,000 square foot full-service spa. Dover Downs Hotel & Casino breaks ground in May 2007 on a $56 million “Phase VI” expansion project to add a new main casino entrance, a 20,000 square foot gaming floor with 500 additional slot machines, Fire & Ice at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino (a casino lounge with seating for 200), three branded restaurants, retail shops and a gourmet coffee cafe.
The most notable races hosted at Dover Downs are the Dover Downs Progress Pace and the Matron Series. The Dover Downs Progress Pace consists of a series of 3 races, the 3-Year-Old Pace Elimination ($35,000 purse), the 3-Year-Old Pace Final ($300,000 purse) and the 3-Year-Old Pace Consolation ($25,000 purse).
